woman with soft dimple Restylane® is soft-tissue filler – available at our Houston, Texas practice – that is used to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and restore fullness to the lips. It is made of non-animal based stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in all living cells of vertebrates. Restylane® is free of animal proteins. Though effective for the correction of numerous cosmetic flaws, the area that Restylane® helps the most is the laugh lines, called the nasolabial creases (parenthesis around the mouth).

Your Restylane® Consultation

During consultation, Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Azita Madjidi will listen to your concerns and explain different forms of fillers that would work for you. Filler injection is performed in the office after full evaluation of the areas of your concern. The decision for choosing Restylane® will be based on the depth, location, and severity of the wrinkles.

Allergies are extremely rare to Restylane^® because it is free of animal products and the body recognizes hyaluronic acid as not being of foreign nature. There is no need for allergy testing prior to treatment.

A topical anesthetic will be placed over the area that is to be injected. By combining 0.3% lidocaine (a mild pain killer) with Restylane®, we are able to make Restylane-L®, which minimizes the discomfort. Ice and pressure will be applied for a few minutes in order to prevent and minimize bruising and swelling. The result is instantaneous and you can see the change in a mirror immediately. Your feed back is important during the treatment.

Restylane® may be combined with other fillers at the same time or at different times for better results if needed.

Restylane® can be used with BOTOX® injections for a greater effect, especially on deep wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic will have to be injected at least a week before the filler to minimize the risk of spreading the filler away from the treated area. An example of a flaw that can benefit from combined treatment is vertical, deep frown lines.

After the injection, swelling and mild redness should subside after two to five days. An evaluation at two weeks is recommended to see if there are areas that need further injection. Results with Restylane® last longer in areas with less movement, such as the upper portion of the laugh lines, than in areas with more mobility such as lips. Longevity also varies depending on each patient's metabolism. In general, results last nine months to a year but there is no set time. It is different for each individual and each area treated. Restylane® injections can be repeated as many times as necessary.
